Boys Swim and Dive at Breck
Breck/Blake boys swim and dive is a unique team of young men grades 7-12 from Breck and Blake schools. The team has been a co-op for about 18 years. We are a team that focuses on the mechanics of swimming and diving, smart training, and the overall well-being of each team member. Some of the team members swim and dive year round and other members participate in other sports or activities once the season is completed.
The team has been extremely successful at the section and state levels achieving numerous first place rankings and state championships. This is all due to the team’s hard work, and their willingness to step outside of their comfort zone when training and racing. Another other reason for the team’s success, and each team member’s “stick-to-itiveness,” is the mental training the team focuses on during practice and outside of practice. The coaching staff is extremely dedicated and committed to each team member’s success, no matter how big or small the goals.
Breck/Blake swim & dive is a team that wants to win, but winning is not the primary focus of the team. We focus on the process. The process is learning how to control what one can control, emotionally and physically. It’s also about knowing and learning what one can’t control, such as the outcome. We focus on doing one’s best each and every day.
The team works hard, but they also play hard. The team loves to compete in any type of game or activity. The wonderful thing about this team is they may beat their best friend in a competition or game, but their best friend will be proud of their friend’s accomplishment. However, the outcome may be different next time around.
Even though the team members are from two different schools, they connect outside of the pool, and create connections that last a lifetime. The coaching staff is dedicated to making sure the boys are successful in the pool as well as in the classroom. Along with being successful in the classroom, the team learns life skills that apply once they leave high school. These are skills that make them valuable members of society. As a member of the team, one may not always want to jump or dive into the pool and get wet, but one always does. Team members know it may not be an easy day of practice or competition, but they know it will make them happier, healthier, courageous, and prepared for anything they may face in the future.
We are especially proud to have what is considered a state boys swimming and diving powerhouse. During the past 8 years, we have been consistently ranked in the top five teams in the state. The team has won the MNHSL class A state tournament eight years in a row, making it the “winningest” swim team in Minnesota high school history. Furthermore, our program has earned frequent honors including: numerous All-State awards, multiple All-American individual and relay swims and individual state champions, state swimmer of the year award, and many section and state coaching awards. Some recent graduates have gone on to compete at the college level at institutions such as Yale, Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins. As you might expect, not everyone on the team is a state champion, but everyone competes as a closely tied group, improves together, and no other team has as much fun on deck.
Blake Boys’ Swim & Dive is a co-op team with the Breck School and goes by the team name the “Bearstangs.” Varsity practices are held at the Breck School pool while the JV team and divers practice at Blake. All “home” swim meets are hosted at Breck’s pool.
